The original sword, Royal Armouries #IX.16, is believed to have been dredged from the River Thames and dates between 1400 and 1430. This type of longsword would have been carried by English knights during major conflicts such as the Hundred Years' War—including the famed Battle of Agincourt in 1415.

Used in both armored and unarmored combat, this was a weapon built for adaptability—allowing for single-handed use on horseback, or two-handed power when fighting on foot.
